To access satellite internet the provider will supply you with an antenna dish, on average this is about .75 of a meter in diameter, as well as a small external modem that connects to this outside dish. The modem connects to your computer computer through the ethernet port. FCC requirements regulate the installation of the equipment, so these installations normally are done by trained certified technicians. A common question is why this is regulated. Basically, a satellite internet system is a two way communication device. This means that signals (upload and download)are transmitted through the dish apparatus. This is unlike a Directv or Dishnet system where the satellite antenna dish just functions as a receiver or download dish.
A common misconception is that satellite internet access can be be delivered through a satellite tv provider such as Directv or Dishnetwork. This is not possible mainly because these dish's are only designed to download programming, which is a one directional flow of information. Secondly, those dish's are aimed at satellites whose only fuction is to deliver programming. Therefore, satellite internet requires its own dedicated dish antenna.
So yes, satellite internet can be synonymous with the general term dish internet, but it would be erroneous to classify it as Directv or dish network internet.
Advantages far outweigh the inconvenience of dial-up
As noted above the benefits of satellite internet are in most respects comparable if not superior to DSL or cable internet. There is one exception, and that is what the technical world refers to as latency. In simple terms this means the delay in the time it takes the information to travel back and forth between the satellite and you. In the satellite internet world this delay can be anywhere from 300 milliseconds to 1.9 seconds. This would only be noticeable if you are running a very time sensitive application such as voice over ip (voip), onine twitch gaming or connecting into a virtual private network (VPN). Normally, satellite internet can be compared to watching live tv. The down flow of images that you are watching are continuous and unbroken, but there is actually a second or more delay from when the event is actually occurring till it downloads to your tv receiver. Another common question is what and is there a latency factor with DSL or cable internet. Yes, its about 200 milliseconds. This smaller delay does not effect the applications as mentioned.
