Hughes Net FAQ
What is Hughes Net Satellite Internet?
Hughes Net Internet Service is a wireless internet service that connects you to the Internet via a satellite signal. We can transmit this signal to your home or office in the Continental United States, so long as you are able to clearly see the southern sky. Hughes Net is much faster and more reliable than dial-up service. Please refer to the remainder of the Hughes Net FAQ for the answers to the rest of your Hughes Net questions.
Do I still need my dial-up modem with Hughes Net?
No. Your Hughes Net installation uses our own proprietary hardware that we supply and connect for you when you sign up for service. It fully replaces all dial-up modems.
How fast is Hughes Net Satellite Broadband Internet?
You can choose between three service plans, each of which offer different maximum data transfer speeds. These plans are known as the Basic, Power 150 and Power 200 packages.
The Hughes Net Basic plan allows subscribers to download from the Internet at a maximum speed of 1.0Mbps. 200Kbps is the maximum upload speed for the Basic plan.
The Hughes Net Power 150 package provides a connection with a maximum download speed of 1.5 Mbps and maximum upload speed of 250 Kbps.
Our fastest plan, the Hughes Net Power 200 plan, gives users a maximum download speeds of 2.0 Mbps with upload speeds that can reach 300 Kbps.
Please check this Hughes Net FAQ periodically for new plan information
Please note that connection speeds usually run at about 60 to 70 percent of the maximum possible speed for both download and upload during peak usage times. Our service is not always ideal for time-sensitive applications such as day trading programs and video gaming. A VPN (virtual private network) installation will reduce speeds even further.
What kind of computer do I need?
Hughes Net requires a Windows of Macintosh operating system with networking capability. We recommend Windows 2000 or later (including Vista and Windows 7). Hughes Net is fully functional on Macintosh computers running Mac OS X 10.1 or higher.
Can I use Hughes Net with my home or small office network?
Yes. You can connect several desktop or laptop computers to one Hughes Net account.
Can I connect my laptop to Hughes Net with my PCI/MCIA card adapter?
Certainly. You can use a PCI/MCIA adapter with an Ethernet connector or a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet network card or adapter.
How long does it take to get Hughes Net service?
After you place your order online, we contact you within five days to set up an installation appointment at a convenient time for you and to answer any Hughes Net questions that you may have. We can usually install your system within two weeks of your order.
Can your technician set up my home network?
You can arrange for home network set-up assistance when you make your installation appointment. We do not provide support for home network maintenance.
Can I use my VPN (Virtual Private Network) with Hughes Net?
Yes, but it can reduce your connection speed by up to 75 percent.
